Learn how to take accurate body measurements for perfectly fitting sewing patterns. Discover essential tools, step-by-step techniques, and tips for recording and applying your measurements.

One of the most rewarding aspects of dressmaking is creating clothes that fit you! But to get that perfect fit, you need to start with the foundation: understanding and taking accurate body measurements. This is where we need to start the whole process, truly knowing the body that will be wearing this clothes.

Before you begin, get your tools:

  • A flexible tape measure - make sure to check the measurements against a solid ruler to check its accuracy! They can stretch over time.
  • A full-length mirror or a friend to help. Even set up the camera on your phone or computer to see your body.
  • A notebook or the printable measurement chart you can download here!

Wear close-fitting clothing, stand tall, and take a few deep breaths. If possible, ask a friend to help with harder-to-reach areas, like your back. We’re here to make clothing that you feel beautiful in, no matter what the tape measure says!

Pro tip: Take your time and repeat measurements to ensure accuracy. Accuracy here makes all the difference later!

  •  This chart is also great to keep on hand when you’re checking size charts online!

When working with commercial patterns, compare your measurements to the pattern's size chart. Adjusting patterns to your unique measurements is where the magic happens. For example, you might need to add length to a bodice or blend between sizes for a perfect fit.

Remember: Customising patterns is an art, and practice makes perfect!

Practice and perfect your process

Like any skill, taking measurements improves with practice. Revisit your measurements regularly, as our bodies naturally change over time.

If you’re feeling unsure, practice with a sewing buddy or a dress form. Even professionals take multiple tries to get everything just right – it’s part of the journey.

Find a dress form and practice taking its measurements and even put tape on the form to mark each measurement. You can label each line as well if you need a visual reminder of each measurement.

In conclusion

Accurate body measurements are the cornerstone of perfectly fitting garments. By mastering this skill, you’re setting yourself up for success as a dressmaker.

The measurements can only take you so far. It’s the first step to creating or adjusting the pattern while it’s still in 2D format. You will need to take the next step of making a mock up and going through the fitting process in 3D before the pattern can be perfectly fitted.

Next up we will go over the fitting process!
